Hyrum Lake
|
Hyrum Lake is located just south of the town of Hyrum, which is just south
of Logan. Click here for map. The lake is fairly small and
shallow, with a maximum depth of about 25 feet. Altitude is 5,700 feet. Our report on Hyrum Lake is sketchy because it's based on a single "jump in to see what's there" on the way home from another dive site. Photo: Hyrum Lake looking southeast |
| The water: Hyrum Lake is a brownish green with visibility
of 4-7 feet. Surface temperature was 70 degrees, with no thermocline. Photo: A crawdad is lured out by the smell of Cheez Whiz. September 15, 1998 Bruce Argyle, Sea & Sea Seamaster Pro EX 20 mm, ambient light with fill flash. |

Seasonal Variation: We'd imagine this lake would be diveable early spring through late fall.
Facilities: There's a state park at the lake with camping, picnic areas, and bathrooms. The beach at the park has warning buoys anchored, but the lake sees a lot of boat traffic on weekends. Logan (12 miles away) is your closest source of air fills.
| What to see: In five minutes, we saw bass, perch, and
crayfish. The perch seemed to be everywhere, and readily responded to Cheez Whiz. The bass
were a uniform green (not having the usual coloration pattern) but appeared to be
smallmouths. Photo: Yellow perch |

Our Recommendation: This lake could be fun if you like interacting with fish. You would need to pick your dive time and dive site carefully. There were no "secluded coves" to protect divers from boat traffic, so you'd want to stake out the dive area with multiple flags (and stay right under them). Our dive was made to the south of the dam at GPS N 41° 37.389' W 111° 52.322'.
| Regulations: Spearfishing is not allowed. Fees: There's a $4 fee for the state park. |
| Exposure: In September, our photographer was comfortable with a farmer john only. |
Getting there:
Take I-15 north to the US-89 & US-91 exit at Brigham City. Proceed
up the canyon towards Logan. About 8 miles before Logan, you'll encounter highway 101.
Turn right (east). Follow 101 a couple of miles until it turns right, then continue
straight south to the state park. (The highway turns left into Hyrum, but you should
continue straight.) The dam is west (left) from the park.
| P.S. If you're looking for other dive sites in the Logan
area, may we recommend Tony Grove and Bear
Lake. Don't bother looking at Cutler Reservoir (at right), which is just a swamp with
a boat ramp. Photo: Cutler Reservoir near Logan, one of the lakes we visited -- just so you'd know the diving is worthless there. |
