The 1998 Crustacean Riding Contest is over. And when the silt settled and everyone came up for air, Dominic Bria was the champion once again.
| Bria has some advice for future contestants.
Watch out for the claws. he says. "I used to sing bass until... until the
accident." Bria also emphasizes the importance of training. You hop on, and old Crusty goes into full reverse, zipping backwards across the ocean floor. Women are natural lobster riders because theyre used to dancing backwards. It takes more practice for a man. The photo at right shows Dominic Bria winning the All-American Weightbelt Buckle for his winning ride. Bria rode Old Scampi, a 1200-pound Maine lobster brought to Catalina Island just for the Crustacean Riding Contest. |

After the award-winning ride, guests gathered around to pet Old Scampi while the chef got the vat boiling. Contest organizers estimate that over 400 bottles of shrimp sauce were used.
